Whom; Light & Mikami
Rating; PG-13
When; Several months after they arrived in the Shinigami world
AUverse; Shinigami
Summary; TBA

No matter how many times he closed his eyes and reopened it, the scenery before him did not change. The ground was still dry and cracked and every time the smallest gust of wind blew, dust scattered everywhere. And the sky… if it could be considered a sky (Light has not entirely figured out how the Shinigami world worked just yet) was either red or pitch black.

It has been several months since he was condemned to this place and he has found a habitable space away from the other Shinigamis. They are a despicable lot and if he had the power to eliminate them, he would have done away with the majority of them within the first week of his arrival. But as it is, he had to be satisfied with keeping his distance.

First came confusion, followed quickly by anger. Despair slowly crept up upon him as it slowly sunk it that he had lost, but there was a part of him that did not admit it.

Mikami had been avoiding the other shinigami just as carefully. A disgusting bunch of slobs and slackers - those he had judged most strongly when alive. But now... now he was one of him and the thought disgusted him.

Still, he was better. He knew he was better. Surely the shining white wings that the dust never even seemed to touch were proof enough. Even like this, trapped here in suffering, the world acknowledged that Mikami had always been pure and just. It was a slim consolation, but it was something.

His train of thought was cut off when he saw a figure in the distance. Even from far away, his vision obscured by dust, Mikami knew who it was. The frame of the other had been burned into his mind long ago as he stared through the tiniest of cracks in a door.

He started for the other, a smirk forming on his still-pristine features.

He was leaning against a rib of a long dead creature of unknown origin. Whatever it used to be, it must have been humongous for Light could settle quite comfortably on one of its sun-bleached bones.

The brunette was playing with the idea of going to observe the human realm, but decided against it. It would just prick his temper and sour his mood. He could not resist going to watch the first few weeks, but he quickly decided that it was not worth the pain. It was akin to rubbing salt into the wound and Light was no masochist. But yet, the temptation of the portal still beckoned to him and more often than not, Light answered its call.

Footsteps approaching alerted Light to another approaching Shinigami. It was rare than any of them made the trouble to travel all the way out here when they could waste their lives gambling back in the pit. Almost boredly, Light turned to look who it was… and his eyes widened in shock, before narrowing for a moment. By the time Mikami arrived, Light has schooled his expression into a mask of indifference that had a touch of boredom.

"God!" Mikami greeted, almost cheerfully, but there was a barely-hidden note of twisted cruelty in his voice. "It's been so long. Don't tell me you've been avoiding me - me, your most loyal worshiper, always there to take the fall."

He strode closer, stopping about a foot from the other. "Have you been enjoying watching this realm decay? It's quite exciting, isn't it?" His tone was mocking now.

A terse smile was the reply to other’s question as Light stood, fluttering his wings out of habit to discard the sand that stubbornly clung on to the edges of the feathers. His day has just taken a turn for the worse. The one person he did not want to see was here, in front of him. But he soothed himself with the fact that Mikami did not know where Light currently settled.

He did not take a step back though all his instincts screamed at him to do so. The other was clearly insane and he was too close, so close that Mikami could easily reach out for him. Even so, pride won out.

“Good day to you as well, Mikami,” he said calmly, ignoring his words though inside, he bristled.

"I brought a gift..." Mikami reached into his coat, pulling out something small and shriveled. An apple. "It tastes disgusting, but it's better than the taste of dust that you end up with otherwise." He held it out to Light, gripping it by the stem.

"A symbol of temptation in the Bible... leading the world into sin. Really, you should be offering it to me." His expression darkened. "Perhaps you already did."

Red eyes shifted to look at the apple Mikami held out to him and as much as he loathed every moment of the m- Shinigami’s company, Light would never give him the satisfaction. “Thank you for your kind thought, but I am afraid I would have to decline. I do not make it a habit eat apples.” And with a good reason not to. He had been witness to Ryuk’s… withdrawals and gladly kept away from them.

He knew the words that Mikami uttered was a bait set out for him and he knew better than to bite it. He ignored the other Shinigami’s questions, maintaining the polite, but distant smile.

Mikami took the apple and bit into it himself - a small, polite bite. He wouldn't allow manners to desert him, not even here. He didn't care for the other's obviously fake smile, but he could work on that.

"So, any progress in taking back your role as God?" he asked with a slight smirk as he took another bite.

Light watched the other like one watched a venomous snake. You just do not let it out of your sight lest it struck. Mikami’s words took the dark-winged Shinigami by surprise and the smile faltered and his eyes narrowed.

He kept a tight leash on his anger as he spoke, “I do believe there is such a thing as privacy, Mikami.”

"Not here, to be honest." Mikami's grin widened a little. "No walls, no doors. You're open and exposed to the world. It's irritating, isn't it?" He hated it too, but bringing Light down was more important than his own wants for the moment. "And I'm curious. I think, as your follower, I deserve to know."

He disliked the grin that was ever-present on Mikami’s face. It was cruel, mocking, insane, all at the same time. If he were a man with lesser self-control, Light would have reached out and wiped that contemptuous smirk right off his face. Instead, he settled for silently seething.

“Follower? Did you not denounce me the last time we spoke?” he said with venom in his tone.

"I held onto you right until the moment you betrayed me! I was your most loyal! Surely that counts for something, right, God?" Mikami leaned partially into Light's personal space, grin once again wide and completely insane.

"You know, if you could actually prove that some scrap of you was left that deserved worship... maybe I'd join you again! Help you! But it's not like that matters, because there's nothing left, right?"

The most loyal, or the most fanatical of his followers?

Light refrained from commenting, knowing that it would only provoke the other Shinigami. Word play, words spoken to place him at ease, so that the other could prove him wrong, it happened during their first encounter and the brunette suspected that this was the same thing that Mikami was going for again.

But there was nothing to stop the words from affecting him.

There’s nothing left.

There is, is there not?

He, Light, was not defeated yet. He could still continue on his work even when he is a Shinigami. There was certainly no rules as to how many people one could eliminate.

But like Mikami said, who he prove it to?

He pushed the thought away, and turned his back to the other Shinigami, saying nothing. He knew that Mikami would only twist his words against him.

As the other turned away, Mikami let a small chuckle escape his lips. "What, no reply? I was expecting a barrage of counterarguments to prove that there's still some tiny part of you that's actually worth anything! But if you're not even going to reply..."

He shrugged, still grinning. "I guess my assessment was correct, God. You're worthless. Scum."
Yagami Lightluxetlet on May 6th, 2008 08:37 am (UTC)
Light turned and gave the other a venomous glare.

GO AWAY, his brain screamed to Mikami.

“I see no point in indulging you. Whatever argument I bring up, whatever I say, you are going to-” he paused for a moment, “-shoot them down.”

He already said one word too many to the other.
luxtalionis on May 6th, 2008 08:41 am (UTC)
This was too much. Too perfect. Light was giving him all the openings Mikami could hope for. The other was oh-so-fragile behind his flawless facade.

"Ah, but God, surely your arguments are flawless and impeccable!" The shinigami's tone was both mocking and crazed. "How could this poor fool who you don't even know possibly ever shoot your arguments down?"
Yagami Lightluxetlet on May 6th, 2008 08:49 am (UTC)
He could feel his annoyance rising, both at the other and himself for rising to the bait.

Light did the one thing that was uncharacteristic of him. He turned and walked away from an argument. “I think I have enough of you for the day. Have a good day, Mikami.”
luxtalionis on May 6th, 2008 08:52 am (UTC)
Mikami began to chuckle to himself quietly, a chuckle that quickly evolved into a laugh. "Have fun, God! Tell me if you think of an argument someday!" He waved mockingly at the other.
